XIVAuth Moderation Policy
This document serves as a set of guidelines for how content moderation on XIVAuth will work. As XIVAuth is a "gatekeeper" platform, potential moderation actions against users or developers may have a significant impact on large segments of the community. As such, XIVAuth takes a conservative approach on moderation and will only take action in extreme cases such as spam, abuse, or when legally required.
Generally speaking, XIVAuth does not moderate user accounts. Users are free to create their accounts, register their characters, and leverage the platform as they see fit. As the platform supports little to no user-generated content, the surfaces upon which moderation can reasonably be applied are limited.
User accounts, however, may still be removed from XIVAuth in the following conditions:
- If the user is in blatant violation of agreements such as the Terms of Service or the Developer Agreement.
- If the user has a clear and unambiguous history of spam, fraud, or abuse of the service.
- If the user has engaged in activity which poses a clear threat to the stability of the service.
- If the user has engaged in activity in violation of applicable laws, or exposes XIVAuth to legal risk.
XIVAuth does not factor in actions taken on other platforms, including XIVAuth-protected services. Due to the design of XIVAuth, it is not possible to trace how a user has used an issued access key or authentication statement. While external platforms and services may have their own moderation policies (and may have different rules or criteria), XIVAuth does not have control over them and will not handle reports from or for them. If an application is removed from XIVAuth for violations of the Developer Agreement, users who have used that service will not have moderative action taken against them barring exceptional circumstances such as abuse or legal requirements.
Character Bans
In certain cases, XIVAuth reserves the right to mark a character as "banned," preventing self-registration of that character on the platform. This action is normally reserved for characters that may be claimed by a large number of users, as this can cause a considerable load on XIVAuth's servers. In most cases, a banned character will remain registered (and verified) to the character's proper owner; bans only affect new registration attempts.
For example, a character belonging to a well-known streamer or community member may be marked as banned to prevent the generation of bogus Lodestone codes or registration requests. In this case, anyone wishing to register the character will receive an error message and will need to contact an XIVAuth developer to request an exception.
In extremely rare cases, characters may be deregistered from the platform entirely, usually in response to a pattern of fraud or abuse. Examples of such cases include characters that are frequently "traded" between accounts, or characters that only exist to be used in scams, bypass verification requirements, or otherwise exhibit similar behavior.
